Be an angel to yourself! Joy and happiness are an emotional choice in our lives. It’s your own choice to empower yourself and increase your self esteem. Is your glass is half empty or half full? You can increase your happiness quotient by focusing on the simple pleasures that life has to offer all of us. Joy and happiness are both registered in our brains under several different chemicals, with serotonin being one of them. You can increase your own serotonin level by choosing to focus on what brings you joy and happiness. By changing the energy around you, you can up your joy IQ! The Law of Attraction tells us that we manifest what we choose to put our energy into.
Currently there is a lot of psychological research into happiness because it has been discovered that people are generally unhappy. Unhappy people are unproductive people. Consequently psychologists and educators are now developing whole happiness programs and putting them into schools. They are attempting to increase the serotonin level in the brains of kids. Hello! Where is the parent responsibility here? As an educator, I do believe it is important for people and kids to understand our Emotional IQ. That truly is what drives us as human beings. I’m not so sure that putting a lot of school resources into it is the correct solution. I do believe that fundamentally we need to educate all of society on Emotional IQ.
So what are strategies so that you can increase your happiness and joy quotient? The best I have found to work is just two to be honest with you.
1. Plan to take joy breaks frequently throughout your day.
Stop the world at that time and just feel the pleasure coursing through your veins. Breathe deeply and slow time down. Stop any other thoughts from entering your brain. Just live in the moment and let your senses be overwhelmed by the things that bring you joy. Now if you take 5 minutes to do this at least four times a day, that is taking a mere 20 minutes from your day. Each time you do it, it raises your serotonin level. You return to whatever you were doing with renewed vigor and concentration. You simply feel better. You have empowered yourself to bring more happiness and joy into your life. How awesome is that? So be an angel to yourself and start giving yourself a Moment of Joy several times a day!
2. Have an attitude of gratitude.
Every day stop at some point and think of at least 10 things to be grateful for in your life. By focusing on the things you are grateful for, by stating those out loud, you change the energy around you. Within a week, you will find yourself walking with a lighter footstep because you choose to look at the good things in your life every day. Make it a habit!
When I did this exercise in the Reflection section below, I discovered it was pausing for a moment to truly listen to a bird’s song and it was taking 5 minutes to go outside in nature and breathe deeply of the smells and sounds that brought me that rush of calm joy. Now whenever I am dis-stressed, I give those gifts to myself! That, dear friend, is called pampering yourself.
